Learn about the history and design of the New York City subway and examples from around the world. You have to take the time to park and go inside, where intricately carved wood and wrought iron filigree are lit from above by a domed atrium. The Capitol Records Building near Hollywood and Vine was designed by architect Welton Becket in 1956 to resemble a stack of vinyl 45 records. It is one of the most recognizable structures in the city.At night, the blinking light on top of the 13-story tower spells out the word "Hollywood" in Morse code.

Focused on a studio design project, students will study architectural precedents and spatial concepts, perform project site analysis and develop a design concept and create scale drawings and design models for a final presentation to a review panel. Studio class will be supplemented by visits to an architecture firm’s office or a college architecture program. John Friedman Alice Kimm Architects was formed in 1996, when John and Alice recognized a shared aesthetic and social vision for the power of architecture. Since then, the firm has become renowned for an innovative design process dedicated to creating vibrant architectural spaces that catalyze creative interaction and redefine both social and individual realms.

An office space in the Gatehouse is now a soothing spa-inspired lounge designed by Margaret Lalikian. The designer referenced the house’s original name, El Robles—Spanish for oak tree—with a tree-filled landscape mural by Arpy Dabbaghian. “For the wall mural, I had to pick something to bring them into nature and a calming environment,” Lalikian says.

As the effects of climate change continue to reshape the places where we live, as economic and political strains threaten people’s access to art and culture, the Getty stands as a testament to resilience and equity. As one moves higher within the complex, the temperature and color of plants increases in relationship to the degree of exposure to the sun. Cooler blue-greens, blues, purples and greys prevail in lower areas and northern exposures while warm greens and yellows characterize the hotter, south-facing exposures at higher elevations. For staff and visitors, the gardens create an exquisitely appointed vestibule for the offices and museum and set the stage for the treasures encountered within.

Learning about amazing skyscrapers around the world offers inspiration for students to design their own skyscraper through drawings and models. The Center for Architecture offers walking tours, exhibitions, lectures, kids workshops, films, book talks and other events on the topics of architecture, urban planning and design. The project has been one of the most ambitious in the Freedom by Design club, housed within the American Institute of Architects student chapter at NC State. Students in Freedom by Design are committed to designing and building solutions to community problems, and have worked with teachers and administrators at the Governor Morehead School to anticipate and account for student needs in this space. Perched atop a steep hillside in the heart of Los Angeles, the Windsor Residence commands breathtaking vistas of the San Gabriel Mountains, the Silverlake Reservoir, and the glistening skyline of downtown.

The J. Paul Getty Center is a revered institution in Los Angeles, blending art, architecture, and landscape architecture into a cohesive and serene experience. Students will learn about these different bridge types through interactive discussions and visits to several New York City bridges. Students will then use 3D design software to create bridges of their own design. Tuition for all programs is non-refundable within four weeks of the program start date. If cancellation is made at least four weeks prior to the program start date, and we are able to fill your space from our waitlist, we will refund all but a $100 registration fee for each cancelled week. The Center for Architecture will not provide make-ups or refunds for days missed as a result of vacation plans, scheduling conflicts, illness, emergencies, or other events beyond our control.
The Mackey Artist and Architects-in-Residency is a six-month residencies to international artists and architects, selected by an international jury through an annual competition. Residents live and work in the Mackey Apartments, and present projects in exhibitions at the end of their term in March and September. KM Architecture Office’s design of The Grand House in Vĩnh Tường, Vietnam, is centered around creating a shared home for an extended family that returns to their hometown.

Inside, circulation centers around a multistory spine that embodies the spiral nature of galaxies. Other prominent architectural elements ideated for the design include an observation deck and an elevated viewing platform with a flat roof. From these vantage points visitors can look out toward the National Mall and a blank wall of the NASM where audio-visual projections can take place. Stepping inside, the home’s interior design seamlessly weaves together the architectural elements, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere. An oak “liner” wraps the walls, ceilings, and stairs, defining the various spaces and guiding the eye through the home’s open floor plan. The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones.
Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles was designed to look like a ship sailing down Grand Avenue with its giant silver sails unfurled. One of the best things about the Disney Concert Hall is that you can climb all over it. There are stairways and walkways that allow you to go up and walk around those great sails and get some really cool photos.
The core of the programming includes the internationally recognized MAK Artists and Architects-in-Residence Program, an annual residency program for emerging international artists and architects. The MAK Center works in cooperation with the Friends of the Schindler House (FoSH), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve and maintain Schindler's Kings Road house in West Hollywood. On the upper level, the home houses a worship space preserving ancestral altar memorabilia, alongside bedrooms for siblings returning to visit. The house employs a double-layer structure, incorporating large sunshade panels that effectively shield against the western sun while blending harmoniously with the landscape. The materials used in the construction maintain a balance between harmonizing with the surroundings and maintaining a modern aesthetic.
You have to get up close to really appreciate the "veil and vault" concept of architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The white honeycomb covering is suspended over the interior box, letting in natural light, but preventing direct sun exposure to the art within. All plants were carefully chosen based on their horticultural requirements, primarily water, soil, and sun needs. Both native and non-invasive, only plants that are proven performers in the Mediterranean climate of Los Angeles were selected. Due to the specific aesthetic requirements of the gardens, a horticultural maintenance manual for the Getty became part of the project scope. The Getty gardens embrace the California garden tradition, characterized by original and inventive use of a wide range of plants, native and exotic.
Brooklyn Scotto, former director and Katherine Brooks, current director spoke passionately about the importance of teamwork to make this design a reality. “This project was born out of a simple yet powerful idea to create a space where children of all ages, regardless of their circumstance, can come together to play, learn and experience the joy of childhood,” said Brooks. Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design.
